Structures III

This course builds on Structures II with a focus on the design and analysis of statically determinate and indeterminate concrete structure systems, mainly frames. Upon completion, students will be able to apply design techniques in defining a frame system and selecting or sizing concrete members, particularly beams, columns, walls, foundations, and slabs. Knowledge and skills are applied in a final team project that highlights a structural form employing concrete.

The Structures III final project focuses on the design of a total-precast parking garage for the city of Marietta, GA, located at 25 Mill St, Marietta, GA 30060 (close proximity to Marietta Square). A multistory car park or parking garage, also called a parking building, parking structure, parking deck, or indoor parking, is a building designed for car, motorcycle, and bicycle parking where there are a number of floors or levels on which parking takes place. In addition to functioning as a parking garage, the building can be designed to include additional programs for generating revenue. This project will feature a competition held by Kennesaw State University's College of Architecture and Construction Management. In the end, there will be three prizes given out to the top three teams, which will be issued by The Downtown Marietta Development.

THE SQUARE-1st Place Win

The Square is a three-story parking garage with a multipurpose event area located in the heart of Marietta, Georgia. This multipurpose event area is designed for public and private events such as farmers markets, flea markets, weddings, parties, gatherings, etc. This area has three sections for activity. The first two sections are covered in turf with access to the egress stairs and elevators. The third section is a metal catwalk area allowing close access to the pronounced and bold “THE SQUARE” sign. This parking garage utilizes brick materiality to maintain the aesthetic of downtown Marietta. The usage of brick upon this structure is used as a finish for the precast panels seen on the exterior of the building. The building is also primarily composed of precast concrete, in both structural elements and design components. Steel can also be seen throughout the parking garage in the railings, the stairs, the catwalk terrace, and for the trusses holding the “THE SQUARE” sign.
