Design Communication I offers lectures and practicum sessions to provide fundamentals of design communication through principles of drawing conventions and related techniques. These include orthographic projections, paraline drawings, and perspective construction systems, aiming to represent design ideas and built forms. The course involves the use of manual media, 2D image manipulation, and 3D modeling using digital tools. The primary intention is to develop visual literacy through visual thinking and acquire skills to represent objects and simple buildings in both two and three dimensions.

Throughout this course, White explored design communication using the Diogene House by Renzo Piano as a case study. This exploration involved creating diagrams, orthographic drawings, digital model making, and iterations.

Design Communication I

Spring 2020

Diogene is a self-contained minimal living space that is located in Weil Am Rhein, Germany by Renzo Piano. The floor area of the structure is 2.5 x 3.0 meters. It has its own water collection and energy systems, the design is entirely self-contained and contains everything needed to live a simple lifestyle, all in a space small enough to be delivered on a truck. Constructed in timber, the pitched roof indicates the function of the tiny space, however the aluminum cladding and rounded edges hint at the technology which underpins the design's self-sufficient nature.
